THE KRANNERT CENTER FOR THE PERFORMlNG ARTS is an auxiliary unit of the College of Fine and Applied Arts of the University of Illinois. In addition to a resident professional staff, the Center houses the departments of Dance, Theatre, and portions of the School of Music including the Illinois Opera Theatre and the choral and orchestra departments. Completed in 1969, the Krannert Center produces approximately 180 events each year with individual performances exceeding 350 annually.
The facility is named for Mr. and Mrs. Herman C. Krannert, whose vision and generous gifts made the creation of the building possible. The architectural design is by Max Abramovitz – a University of Illinois alumnus – , the theatre consultant was Jo Mielziner, and the acoustic consultant was Cyril Harris.
