Sangamon Auditorium
Théâtre à l'italienne
Sangamon Auditorium opened its doors on February 21, 1981, and has since presented
more than 2000 events. The Auditorium’s inaugural event was Hal Holbrook performing
his one-man show, “Mark Twain Tonight”! As recently as the 2002-2003 Season,
Holbrook’s performance of this historical piece continues to pack the Auditorium to
capacity.
During the Auditorium’s illustrious history, some have been
public events; some have been private meetings; some have been children's shows; and some
have been for university students, graduates, and their family and friends. In addition to
the many performance events, the Auditorium has hosted debates and inaugurations. In all,
nearly 2 million people have come to the Auditorium from Illinois and beyond since the
first performance.
The only auditorium of its kind and size in the Springfield
area, Sangamon Auditorium has grown to offer over 120 events each year, presenting the
finest in dance, theater, music, comedy, opera, and musicals. Titles range from Broadway
hits such as Rent, Cats, and Les Miserables, to world-renowned
entertainers such as Jerry Seinfeld, Hal Holbrook, Victor Borge, Bill Cosby, and Mel Torme,
to the amazing movements of Alvin Ailey’s American Dance Theater, Mummenschanz, and
Les Ballets Africains.
