The theatre was designed by Frank Matcham, the great Victorian theatre architect,
and opened in 1891. Since then much of the building has been extensively re-built
but the auditorium remains largely in its original format - although now only
seats 682 rather than the 1,500 it was reported to accommodate when it opened!
