We Wait In The Darkness (2013), created by Native American choreographer Rosy Simas (Seneca) explores such themes as identity, home, displacement and belonging from a contemporary Native perspective. Drawing on her somatic explorations and from her own personal mythology, Simas plumbs the connections between one’s ancestry, culture and history, and the marks it leaves on the body.
Created in collaboration with photographer and filmmaker Douglas Beasley and French composer François Richomme, We Wait In The Darkness, a solo performed by Simas, is a rich mosaic of sound, image and movement.
Rosy Simas has created more than thirty dances over the past twenty years. The fruit of her explorations in contemporary Native dance can be seen in particular in Blood Lines, a solo piece around the matrilineal line of her family. Another project created with Beasley,Threshold, is a film adaptation of a work for six dancers. The Minneapolis-based dancer, who studied contemporary dance, Klein technique, contact improvisation and Butoh, is the recipient of the 2013 Native Arts and Culture Foundation Dance Fellowship and 2014 NEFA National Dance Award. Her work has recently been presented at the Performance Mix Festival in New York and the Talking Stick Festival in Vancouver.
